How Do I Prevent Snakes or Scorpions Outdoors?

Rentokil Boecker Answers

I’ve noticed snakes and scorpions around my garden. How do I stop them from showing up?

Snakes and scorpions don’t usually show up randomly in outdoor spaces—they’re typically drawn in by very specific conditions. Most of the time, they’re simply looking for food, shelter, and moisture, which means prevention is less about “repelling” them and more about making your outdoor areas less attractive to them in the first place.

What attracts snakes and scorpions in the first place?

Understanding what brings them close is the key to keeping them away:

  • Food sources: Snakes follow rodents, and scorpions feed on insects. If those are present, predators may follow.
  • Shelter: Piles of wood, rocks, debris, or dense vegetation give them safe hiding spots during the day.
  • Moisture: Standing water, leaks, and overly watered gardens attract insects—and indirectly, scorpions and snakes.

When these conditions are present together, outdoor areas become ideal habitats.

How do you make outdoor areas less inviting?

The most effective prevention focuses on simple environmental changes:

1. Remove hiding places

Snakes and scorpions prefer dark, undisturbed spaces.

  • Keep lawns trimmed and vegetation controlled
  • Avoid stacking wood, stones, or garden materials near walls
  • Clear leaf litter and clutter regularly

2. Reduce food sources

Since both pests follow their prey, controlling insects and rodents makes a big difference:

  • Keep outdoor waste sealed and clean
  • Avoid leaving pet food outside overnight\
  • Address insect activity around lights and water sources

3. Manage moisture

Damp environments attract insects, which in turn attract scorpions.

  • Fix leaking outdoor taps or irrigation systems
  • Avoid overwatering gardens
  • Eliminate standing water where possible

4. Block entry points around structures

Even outdoor pests may move closer to homes or patios if they find access:

  • Seal cracks in walls and flooring near outdoor areas
  • Check gaps around doors, vents, and utility openings
  • Keep storage areas well sealed and organized

5. Adjust lighting and layout

Outdoor lighting can attract insects at night, increasing scorpion activity:

  • Use lighting sparingly in garden areas at night
  • Position lights away from doors and sitting areas when possible

THE KEY IDEA

There is no single “repellent” that guarantees snakes or scorpions won’t appear outdoors. Instead, prevention is about creating an environment that doesn’t support them. When food, shelter, and moisture are reduced, these pests naturally move elsewhere.
