Mosquitoes tend to increase around homes when they find two things nearby: standing water and places to rest. Even small amounts of water can become breeding sites, allowing mosquitoes to multiply quickly in warm conditions. Common problem areas include plant saucers, buckets, clogged gutters, birdbaths, drains, outdoor toys, uncovered water tanks, and any container where water collects after watering or rain.
Gardens and outdoor spaces with dense vegetation can also attract mosquitoes because they provide shade, moisture, and protection during the hotter parts of the day. Tall grass, shrubs, overgrown plants, and damp areas around the property create ideal resting spots. Warm weather and humidity can further increase mosquito activity and breeding cycles.
Mosquitoes are also attracted to people and pets. They detect body heat, carbon dioxide from breathing, and certain body odors, which is why they often gather in outdoor seating areas, balconies, and gardens where people spend time. Outdoor lighting can sometimes attract insects that mosquitoes feed around as well.
