Fumigation Services

Fumigation is the application of an insecticide gas to a specific volume. As the gas expands into that volume, it penetrates all cracks, crevices and pores. Depending on your specific needs, the chosen gas will comprehensively control all types of pests present in the treated areas without impacting compromising the environment for humans or food qualities.

Additionally, fumigation gas controls insects in every stage of their life cycle, to include the egg and larval stages. Fumigation is also useful in treating most microbial infections, such as mould and fungus. Effective against all stages of insect development and used to help eradicate a variety of pests, fumigation is particularly effective where global trade is involved, such as in agriculture and warehousing facilities.

Fumigation is a complex pest control method with many variables that need to be considered for the treatment to be carried out safely, legally and effectively. Rentokil Boecker® offers expert commercial fumigation services to support businesses, not only ensuring commercial properties and business assets are kept pest-free, but that services are delivered by competent and licensed field professionals with the required knowledge, skill and experience.

Preventative And Curative Pest Fumigation Treatments

Rentokil Boecker® offers a wide range of fumigation services in a variety of commercial settings, typically:

Silo Fumigation

Silo fumigation is an effective method for treating large volumes of product in silos. The silo must meet protocols for the product to be suitable for treatment.

Structure Fumigation

Whole-building fumigation is used to eliminate pests from within the building fabric when pest infestations are severe and alternative eradication measures are insufficient.

Container Fumigation (Static)

Container fumigation is the treatment of a commodity in a standard shipping container or the empty container itself. It eliminates the infestation and removes the risk of pests or diseases from entering or leaving a country.

International Standards For Fumigation (ISPM15)

The International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No.15 (ISPM 15) is an International Phytosanitary Measure developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) that “directly addresses the need to treat wood materials of a thickness greater than 6mm, used to ship products between countries.” These guidelines for regulating wood packaging material were designed to protect international trade.

ISPM15 requirements:

  • All countries that have signed up to the scheme have set criteria in which they will accept timber packaging from around the world and how it must be treated.
  • Each country also has set up implementation dates in which their country will only accept certified treated packaging after those dates.
  • While each country signed up to the scheme will accept treated and certified packaging, the packaging must also meet that country’s own import conditions on top of the ISPM15 requirements.
  • Once packaging has been treated and certified under the scheme it remains certified for the lift of the packaging as long as it does not have to be repaired or parts replaced.

Types Of Fumigants

The deployment of each fumigant is site specific due to the different properties and behaviour of each gas. Rentokil Boecker® uses two gases for fumigation treatment: Phosphine or sulfuryl fluoride based gases.

Phosphine Gas

Magnesium Phosphide and Aluminium Phosphide are common fumigants used to control stored product insects. Besides treating infested grains, cereals and flours, it is also the preferred fumigant to eliminate insects that infest tobacco leaves in storage such as cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne).

Sulfuryl Fluoride Gas

This gas is used for the structural control of SPI and wood boring insect pests.  It is ideal for the control of SPIs that are extensively infesting both process machinery and the fabric of the building.  Rentokil is the only UK company able to offer this fumigation technique due to our unique commitment with the manufacturer of this gas to safe product stewardship training

Risk Assessment

We will develop a fumigation risk assessment and management plan as well as emergency contingency actions prior to delivery of the service.

Fumigant Storage, Transport And Control

Rentokil Boecker® fumigants are closely monitored, stored and transported separately from our standard pest control products.

Gas Detection And Awareness

Rentokil Boecker® fumigators are provided with electronic equipment and personal gas detectors to constantly track changing gas concentrations to ensure our operations are always carried out to the highest safety standards.

Use Of Respiratory Equipment

Rentokil Boecker® fumigators are equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus to ensure their safety during fumigant deployment.
